CSI has had our attention since it first debuted. It really caught the attention with all the scientific applications that they introduced to the public. Today, who isn't at least slightly familiar with forensic protocols? Unlike many dramas that begin by focusing on the work and ending by becoming nothing but a soap opera about the characters, CSI has remained true to its beginnings. While we do know more about each character, their lives and dreams, the main focus is still the solving of murders. Some of the puzzles still are amazing after all these seasons.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation takes place in Las Vegas and details the working lives of a team of forensic investigators. Gil Grissom is the head of the team, which includes Catherine Willows, Nick Stokes, Warrick Brown, Greg Sanders and up until recently, Sara Sidle. There are several quirky peripheral characters who work in the department as lab techs, police and coroners. Each week the audience is treated to two or three murders that the team needs to solve with all their techniques, fancy equipment and puzzle-solving abilities. The show sometimes takes a very creative angle, like the episode early in season 7 called Toe Tags, where the dead bodies in the morgue got to know each other, or the one in season 8 called You Kill Me where Hodges was using the team to figure out scenarios for a board game he was working on. CSI debuted on October 6, 2000 on CBS. Over the past eight seasons, it has been nominated for more than 84 awards, winning 37 of them so far.
The cast is headed up by Gil Grissom, scientist, team leader and entomologist, played in an entertaining low key manner by William Peterson. Former stripper-turned-forensic investigator Catherine Willows is played by Marg Helgenberger with just enough edge to make it believable. Sara Sidle, Grissom's recent love interest, was portrayed by Jorja Fox until her recent departure from the show. Nick Stokes is played by George Eads and Warrick Brown is played by Gary Dourdan. Captain Jim Brass is played by TV veteran Paul Gilfoyle. Former lab tech who moved into the field Greg Sanders is portrayed by Eric Szmanda with great humor. A couple of other rising favorite characters are Dr. Al Robbins, the coroner, played by Robert David Hall and Hodges, played by Wallace Langham.
Since CSI has been on the air for so long, it is difficult to find new reviews in the newspapers. One must resort to episode reviews online at sites dedicated to accurate records of the show's episodes. The following review is from the last episode aired before they ran out of scripts due to the writers' strike, "Bull."
Kristine Huntley writes of the series in general at this stage in its eighth season: " If this is indeed the last episode of the eighth season, I hope that Warrick's crusade against Gedda won't be forgotten; I imagine that's a thread that will be reasonably easy to pick up once the show goes back into production. But I wonder if there will be any more references made to Sara's departure and its effect on Grissom. Her somber presence certainly is missed, but I suspect if the show doesn't return until the fall, the writers will look to move beyond her. While I understand the impetus for that, I can't help but want to see more of the effect her leaving has on Grissom. "
